MOLD MOLD MOLD (ps I hate you midwest)

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 6:52 AM
My brother housesat for us while we were out of town for the 4th of July....
Our basement flooded and they cleaned the carpets with an EXTREMELY mild bleach solution.
Mild enough that all it probably did was rewet the carpet......
Is there any alternative to pulling the carpet back to bleach the floor underneath?  I would really like to avoid that thought.
It's obvious there is mold (smell) and I would love to get rid of it quick!  Suggestions?

Dirty Money

To: Mum

c/o No 1 Heaven's Gate

Hi, Mum,

I'm still sorting out your affairs almost two years since you left us on that warm summer's day. It's raining today, so it's a little bit miserable too. Anyhow, I've been meaning to close your building society account for sometime now. I finally got around to it the other week. The bank wanted a copy of your death certificate and two forms of ID including a passport or driver's licence, and all of this for the princely sum of twenty-three pounds and forty-six pence that remained in your account. You were not very good at saving your money, were you, Mum? But these are rules that are laid down by the government regarding money laundering etc. I guess they were worried that it might be dirty money! Your building society account is now closed.

Love
Peter

[info]synapsomatic's question brought to mind C.P.E. Bach's music, which I've not listened to in a while. Well, when I went looking for online recordings of some on the quick, I found more than I bargained for; now I feel compelled to give everyone a "heads up" —

Ethical jewelry for the big day

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 4:04 AM

With this ethical ring, I thee wed

Opt for guilt-free jewelry and accessorize with a clear conscience

From blood diamonds to dirty gold, it’s tougher than ever to adorn yourself with a piece of guilt-free jewelry. A diamond ring may give you immeasurable joy each time you slip it on, but the sparkle often comes with a price that outweighs its actual cost.

A girl’s best friend is often mined in places like Angola and Sierra Leone, where the gems are used to fund rebel groups that refuse to work toward peace and security. And in Third World countries, diamonds — and other precious stones — are usually mined in riverbeds, which can wreak environmental havoc by upsetting the ecology of the body of water and the surrounding areas.

Thinking that you’ll skip the diamonds and go gold? Buying plain gold jewelry may seem like a good idea, but unless you know where the gold originated and how it was mined, the choice is not an environmental win. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hard rock gold mining (where gold is extracted from tons of rock) generates more toxic waste than any other industry in the United States.

As the ugly truth behind conventional jewelry continues to emerge, a growing group of eco-minded designers is making it possible for you to accessorize with a clear conscience. Here are some of my favorite picks:

Every piece of Alkemie Jewelry is made from reclaimed materials. Transforming something that already exists into something new is one of the most environmentally wise methods of designing. Husband-and-wife team Dara Gerson and Ashley Lowengrub have translated this knowledge into a striking line of cuffs (think octopi, hummingbirds, bats and owls), bangles, necklaces and rings (see photo of hummingbird cuff above). alkemiejewelry.com

Engaged? Thinking of popping the question? Brilliant Earth helps you do it in eco-style with Canadian diamonds. Diamonds mined in Canada follow the country’s strict environmental laws and are conflict-free. Customize your own ring or choose one of Brilliant Earth’s signature styles — each packaged in a box made of rimu, a New Zealand wood sourced from a sustainable forest. brilliantearth.com

Manic Trout’s eco-friendly jewelry line uses reused, recycled or vintage materials to form unique rings, necklaces and earrings. Available in 33 different colors and styles, the vintage button rings are particularly adorable. manictrout.com

You know those clunky gold earrings your grandmother gave you? Instead of sitting in a box in your underwear drawer, they could be put to good use by being recycled into a new piece of jewelry. This is the thinking behind Green Karat, a company that creates original earrings, rings and necklaces out of 100 percent postconsumer recycled gold. Want to start your marriage off right? Slip one of Green Karat’s wedding rings onto your beloved’s finger. greenkarat.com

It's now after 1am, so it's time to say...Happy First Anniversary!!

okay so today i got birthday money early so i can buy warped tickets.
and i can't wait!

but i have some questions.

- do i need to sneak my camera in, or are digitals allowed?
- how long is each band's set usually? (or at least how long is tai's set?)
- does anyone have pictures of the merch? or prices?

anything i should be expecting?
it's my first time going to warped, so i'm pretty stoked.
thanks in advance (:

Sometimes I'm very glad to be here...

Today was my birthday so instead of nicking out to grab a bite to eat and then going back to campus, I bought myself some food and drove up to King's Park. It might be winter (I was wearing thick jumper and gloves) but the sky was so clear and blue, the grass was green and I was sitting up on a hill looking over the city and the Swan River...

I regret not taking my camera with me. It's the kind of day that makes me happy to live in Perth, Western Australia. Yes, we're supposed to be one of the most isolated capital cities in the world. Yes, everybody comes here and says it's too quiet/small/slow. But we have an awesome natural park, the land for which was set aside in 1872 - amazing when you consider that today the land is very valuable and it's surrounded by heavily developed and expensive areas.

It was a nice, peaceful lunch with the kind of view that belongs on a postcard.

I assume that many people in this comm won't have been to Perth. So, what kinds of sights make you happy to live in your part of Australia? Or make you want to visit? Or, if you're also in Perth, is there some other spot that makes you proud/happy to be here?

"I forgive you too."

Hey! I'm Stephanie :] Nice to meet you, how's the wife, etc, etc.

My current obsession is to get ALL of TAI TV on my ipod. I got season 2 and what we have so far of 3, but I want all of season 1, even if I have to rip it from youtube.
So I was wondering if, being the amazing people that you guys are, you could tell me (maybe make a list or something?) all of the episodes starting from the "hi! This is our new website!" video and ending at the Irving Plaza one.

Please and thank you :]

warped setlist

Hey guys!

TAITV should be posted soon. We've got really bad internet here, in the parking lot, in the middle of nowhere. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer sun! See you at a show soon?

Peace,

Since UCF decided to change the website...

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
some of the links don't work and it is so much harder to find stuff.

Anyway, the link for the academic calendar is unaccessible, so I was wondering if anyone happened to know when our 2008-2009 winter break is, or more specifically, the date of our return from winter break?

I want this hoodie

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Hey, I don't know what it's called but I'm looking for this Clad zip up hoodie. It's black with the purple bat heart/diamond. Pete's been seen wearing it, he wore it on FN MTV also. So if anyone has one for sale or knows what it's called that would be great!

here's a pic of petey in it. It used to be on the website, but not so much anymore. :(

Post some pictures of outhouses or bathrooms that have given you a lasting impression, and talk about what the restroom means to you.

WHAT?!!? THE?!?! FUCK!?!?

of bedding and vodka

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
two questions (that may or may not be of the silly variety):

1. I have a 2inch "memory foam" bed topper for my bed. Does anyone know of any way to clean the thing? It could use a good cleaning, beyond the "febreeze it until it smells good". I'm fairly certain it would be too big for my washing machine, even if you can clean it in there. Any ideas?

2. The other night we made some lovely vodka soaked watermelon. We ate up all the watermelon, leaving the vodka juice. Right now I have this leftover "watermelon vodka" sitting in a tupperware container in the fridge. Would this be adequate storage? Do I need to use it up by a certain date.
